  • Designing and Producing Charter Scrolls with Lady Adrianna the Fierce
The backbone of the scribal system in An Tir is the charter scroll system. Original scrolls are made from scratch completely each time for one person (usually reserved for unusual or prestigious awards). We have hundreds of awards to give out each reign and dozens (if not more) for each group, and for some Baronies, more than that. How do we do it? Charters. A charter design is created for the award, for instance, the Award of Arms for An Tir for that Reign, and it includes the calligraphy and the line art, but no recipient name, date, or color. Then copies are made and passed around to color in, and the colored versions are assigned to award to recipients.

Designing these charters includes design considerations (how thick to make the lines, what are the standard borders, how big are seals, etc) and logistics (when to pass out blanks, how long does it take to get them back, how fast or slow do you want them painted) and cultural flair (how to incorporate time and period into the design, how to pick the wording, etc). I will explain any of this you need to know from someone who has made charters in this Kingdom for over 20 years. I will show examples of how I design and calligraphy them, transport them, and things to keep in mind while you are working on designing or even painting one.

Taught by the current Couronne Rouge Herald of An Tir, maintainer of the An Tir Roll of Arms.

Have you ever wondered about those drawings that everyone displays at their camp or on the things they wear? Are you thinking about designing a device for the first time or just have a wild and silly idea for a device that you would like to share with others? This class will provide an opportunity for adults and youth to do just that! While you work on creating your device, I will lead an overview and discussion of basic rules and guidelines for designing pictorial heraldry. Regardless, the main goal is to be creative and simply have fun. We will also discuss free and low-cost tools to help you build your device. There will be opportunities throughout the time to share and receive informal critique of your work!

Online material will include a downloadable PDF with all planned topics as well as links to downloadable charges and resources to advance your knowledge of heraldry. It is recommended, but not required for participants to visit the “Book of Traceable Heraldic Art” at to get started with downloading their favorite images.
