War
Point Information:

A&S War point
information:

This year’s Arts and Sciences War point will be based
on the theme WAR!
What we would like to
see is your entry including “war” in some way,
shape or form. Examples of this could be: an illuminated page
illustrating war; armour; a weapon of war; a calligraphed
peace treaty (to end a war); a lecture or paper on
war…the possibilities are limited only by your
imagination!
This year you are not required to make your entry on site.
You may use whatever materials and time you need before the
event to prepare your entry. Demonstrations on-site are also
allowed (but please, no Greek Fire!).
Single and group entries are allowed. Please email me with a
short description of your entry before June 18th, so that I
may recruit an appropriate number of judges.

Heraldry War Point:

Show your pride! Every encampment with a heraldic display
(personal or principality) will earn points for their
principality. The principality with the most heraldry on
display with take the heraldry war point.

Bardic War
Point:

  Lady Adelheid
Holzfallerin (nerissah (at) gmail (dot) com

Have you got what it
takes to be the top bard of AT War? Strut your stuff during
the bardic competition! Our competition will be modelled
after a very famous television show that pits prospective
popstars against one another in front of a panel of judges,
and hands the final decision over to home viewer. There will
be a judge from both Tir Righ and Avacal who will advance
bards from each principality to the finals and the populace
will be invited and encouraged to enjoy the entrants and
‘vote’ for a winner. Not to be missed, the bardic competition
will be held in the hours prior to court with the final
occuring just before court begins!

Volunteer War
Point:

We will be having a
volunteer war point again this year. But with a twist. As
usual, 1 hour equals 1 point. EXCEPT in the instance of gate
volunteering! For every 2 hour shift you volunteer and
complete at gate, you will receive 4 (FOUR) points for your
principality. Gate is the best way to meet new people, and
welcome your friends and frenemies to what will be an awesome
event! If you would like to ‘pre-book’ your  volunteer
hours at gate, please contact Brother Selewine (selewine (at)
shaw (dot) ca)

How to Run Gate part I
Gate is important – how it runs can affect how smoothly
the event runs (ever been in a really long lineup when all
the fighters need to be at lists that opened a half hour
ago?) This class is for the person – the Head
Gatekeeper – who handles Gate for the event’s
autocrat. We’ll cover physical setup of the Gate,
paperwork, pre-event preparation, post-event wrap up, cash
control and working with volunteers. Also, working with the
autocrat: things you need to know from the autocrat, things
you should be letting the autocrat know, discussing the site
fee structure with the autocrat; things the autocrat might
want you to handle at gate which you likely should not.
Instructor has five years as a branch exchequer, four years
as Principality Exchequer, more gate sitting shifts than she
cares to remember and has run gate for many events. A handout
will be provided. Class Size: min 2, max 12 Cost: FREE!

Indigo Dyeing for Beginners
Want to make that next embroidery or weaving project just a
little bit better? That cloth accessory you have planned just
a little cooler? How about hand-dyeing some of your thread or
fabric in indigo? This class will show you how to set up a
simple (modern) indigo vat suitable for urban/apartment
dwellers that won’t have your neighbours banging down the
door complaining about the smell, but let you have the same
cool coloured-cloth as your persona would have had! This
beginners’ class will cover the history of indigo/woad
dyeing; the chemical process of how it works in both the
modern vat we will be setting up during the class, and in
traditional medieval fermentation vats; how to set up a
chemical indigo vat and safety issues, and discuss how a
fermentation vat would be set up. If the vat successfully
sets up (and it should, barring weather problems) we will be
dyeing sample threads and fabrics. Course cost will include
the handout and a starter kit for creating a vat of your own.
Students are asked to wear old/dark clothes with short or
rollable sleeves and an apron if you like, as any indigo you
get on them will NOT come out. Students are also asked to
bring a pair of rubber gloves (heavy duty kitchen gloves are
fine), and white or natural fibre samples of fabric and/or
thread. Fabric pieces should be big enough to cut into six
2-4 inch-square pieces (please do NOT cut before class),
skeins should be approximately embroidery-floss sized, you’ll
need six. You’re encouraged to bring as many different types
of natural threads and fabric as you can (including linen!),
but please no heavy felted wool (like winter coat weight). If
you have larger skeins (like for tablet weaving warp, or
small/thin pieces of cloth (like for a hat, or even an actual
hat, or a veil), please feel free to bring it along, and we
can play with the vat after class. Students are advised that
the vat takes time to set up, so we will begin the class with
creating the stock solution. DO NOT BE LATE. Cost: TBA Max #
students: 8. THIS IS A 4 HOUR CLASS
