Lions Gate Spring Ithra Session -April 13 & 14, 2002

The session is being held at Capilano College in North Vancouver BC Canada.
There will not be an Ithra revel on the Saturday evening of the session.
Instead, classes end early (4 pm) on the Saturday so then any who
wish to can attend Baron Steffano’s Birthday Feast.

Introductory Armour Project: 14th Century Spaulders 2
days (16 hours)
Alexander-Philippe de Bergerac
Students will have the opportunity to take home mild steel
shoulder protection along with the knowledge of a fair number of
introductory metalworking concepts.
Class size: min 2, max 5
Class fee: $7.50 provides all materials
Students should bring: Gloves, hearing protection, and safety glasses
if they have them. Please do not wear garb. You will get dirty.
Please wear long sleeves and no loose clothing.
Be prepared to sign a waiver.

Saturday Morning
Introduction to Kumihimo
4 hours
Catte of Lions Gate
Students will learn period Japanese techniques to make several
different braided cords (flat, round, square and hollow. These can
have infinite variety of shape, colours, patterns and textures; their
use is limited only by the imagination.
Class size: min 2, max 6
Class fee: $4.00 provides a Kumihimo wheel to keep, materials to
braid, and a handout with complete instructions.
Students can bring embroidery floss, perl cotton, or any other
materials they would like to try braiding. The instructor will have
some materials on hand.

Survey of Medieval Science

Gerhard Kendal of Westmoreland
Thrill to the discovery and development of sciences through the ages,
as man and woman discover the inclined ramp, the wheel, the computer
and a few things in between. Was it God’s doing? Is it still? And
where do lizards rank in the hierarchy of Heaven? These questions and
more answered. Bring an open mind.
Class size: min 3, max 20

Live Performance Workshop (A) for Arabic Drumming

Sayyidd Shareef Musiqi al-Rashid al-Thaeib Jaras Aswad
Performance course for drummers to learn how to interact with live
dancers. How to drum, change rhythms and communicate while performing
in any venue.
Class size: min 2, max 12
Class fee: $1.00
Students should bring some sort rhythm instrument from the following
list (Darboukka, Doumbek, Zylls, Bodhran, tambourine, Clavés, Djembe)
Any other by pre-approval of instructor before class.

SCA Dance
2 hours
Morganna & Kris am Pohl
Come and learn some of the basic dances, such as Hole in the Wall,
and some that are a little different, like Zemer Atik. No experience
necessary.
Class size: min 4, max 30
Class fee per student: $1.00 provides dance steps of some of the
dances we are doing.

Live Performance Workshop (A) for Arabic Dancers
2 hours
Sayyiddh Asada al’Izraqi al’Thaeib, Jaras Aswad
This is a class to serve as a starting point for new dancers and a
warm-up for experience dancers.
Class size: min 2, max 12
Class fee: $1.00 provides a small handout with some dance
suggestions/web info/costume
The students must wear comfortable clothes that allow movement. This
is a physical class.

Merchanting in the SCA

Genevieve Barbota of Gryphonshold
Merchanting in the SCA and some suggestions to making life easier
for the merchant. The class will include what you can expect when
you merchant and how it is different from regular SCA camping. There
will also be a brief overview of merchanting in period. Students
should bring note-taking materials.

Live Performance Workshop (B) for Arabic Drumming & Dancing

Sayyiddh Asada al’Izraqi al’Thaeib Jaras Aswad
This class is a continuation of Live Performance Workshop (A) for
Arabic Drumming and Live Performance Workshop (A) for Dancers. Here
we will combine the two classes and figure out how to put what we
learned in the classes to use. PRE-REQUISITE – Students must have
attended one of the other Live Performance Classes this Ithra.

Learn to Weave Without a Loom
2 hours
Brigitte assisted by Gilbert der Eber
Learn to weave without a loom. Belts and sturdy straps can be
quickly woven. Since the weaver needs only
a few small sticks their project travels easily and can be done
virtually anywhere. The course is ‘hands on’ and at the end of two
hours each student should have a nearly completed belt.
Class size: min 3, max 6
Class fee: $3.00 provides a handout; wool; weaving sticks
Students should bring scissors/measuring tape to assist in
measuring/cutting the warp

Juggling
2 hours
Lilya De Gascony
Beginners will learn the basic juggling pattern and practice exercises.
Advanced students can learn over ten tricks as well as juggling with a partner.
Class size: min 1, max 10
Class fee: $1.00 provides a handout
Please bring a positive attitude, chair (if desired)

Pouches and Girdles – Gerhard Kendal 2 hours
An illustrated lecture showing who wore what with which…belts,
pouches and girdles…and their costumes. Bring a selection of your
own accessories to class.

Mead, Theory and Practice
2 hours
Geoffrey of Mylar
Students will be introduced to the basics of brewing with an emphasis
on Mead making. This is both “hands on” and Theory and students will
go home with a bottle of must (brewing mead) and instructions to
complete the process. Handout is included cost to be announced
THE CLASS IS RESTRICTED TO STUDENTS 19 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER.

Sunday Morning
Basic Bodhran

Ingvar the Restless
The course consists of two parts, an introduction and discussion,
and longer hands on drum lessons and practices. The intro section
goes into the history, construction, purpose of a drum, various
playing methods, and correct usage and courtesy.
The hands on section will attempt to teach basic drum playing
including single beats, rhythm /timing, combination beats, rolls and
if we progress far enough basic Jig and Reel beats.
Students must provide their own bodhrans (drums) and tipper/beaters.
Class Size: min 1, max 8
Class fee: $1.50 provides a handout and Practice CD
It is recommended that all students bring a scarf or long piece of
cloth that they can wrap around their arm where it is pressed against
the drum. (for comfort!)

14th century Hose Construction
2 hours

This course will teach you how to construct a pair of footed hose
as based on findings from London in the 14th century. Hose of other
cultures will be discussed. Please bring 1 1/2 meters of wool or
linen, thread and sewing implements if you wish to construct a pair
during class.

Nalbinding: How to make a Heel or Thumb; Hands On

Sigrid Briansdotter
To take this course you must bring either, a sock toe done up to the
break of the foot (where your shin hits the top of the foot), or a
mitten done to the point where you want to put the thumb. You will
also need to bring a needle and enough yarn to complete your heel or
thumb. I will teach how to make one type of heel and thumb. We will
go through leaving a hole, reconnecting, decreasing, adding in a new
row, shrinking and expanding the thumb loop, and finishing an
article. I will also discuss other period methods for making heels
and thumbs, plus alternate possibilities. Which variation of
nalbinding you use does not matter as long as it interlocks with at
least one previous loop in the same row. Simple and cross-knit
looping (and related variations) work differently.

PRE-REQUISITE: sock or mitten to point of starting heel or thumb.

Sunday Afternoon
Tattooing and Period Body Decoration

Every single culture, without exception, has marked, altered or
otherwise decorated themselves. While the word “tattoo” is out of
period, the process existed in a number of cultures which are
pre-1650. The Picts, the Egyptians and the peoples of the Far East
all marked themselves. We will discuss the marking and methods of
these and other cultures. The application of Henna will also be
taught. Note: Students must be 18 or older.
Class size: min 3, max 10

Beginning Nålbinding: Mammen Stitch; Hands On
4 hours
Sigrid Briansdotter
In this course I will teach you how to start, tension off your
thumb, pivot, connect to the previous row, & increase. All you need
to know to start a hat, mitten or sock. We will be using the
nålbinding variation found in a sock from Egypt dating to the 4th-6th
cent AD & in the silver and gold pennants from Mammen, Denmark (late
10th cent AD) among others. Supplies will be provided: one large
tapestry needle, one skein of single-ply wool, & a handout containing
drawings of the method.

Tavern Games

Mikhail Kurganovic
A brief introduction to games suitable to the social art of sitting
around such as at a tavern.
Class size: min 3, max 12
Class fee: $1.00 provides a handout

Directions
To Capilano College
Take your best route to Second Narrows Bridge, which connects
Vancouver to North Vancouver. Take the third exit to Mount Seymour
Parkway and Capilano College. Go through the traffic lights and up
the hill. Take the second right turn (at the traffic lights) to
Capilano College and follow the road to the parking area. The Lions
Gate Grand Ithra is in the Cedar Building which is up the road at the
far left of the parking lot. Follow the SCA signs.

If you are coming by bus, take your best route to Phibbs Exchange.
Take the Capilano College bus to the College turn-around. There is a
walkway directly to Cedar Building. Follow the SCA signs.

PARKING
Parking anywhere at Capilano College requires a parking ticket
whether you park in a lot or on a street. The cost is $2.00 per day.
The ticket machine accepts loonies ($1.00 coins) or doubloons ($2.00
coins).

Accommodation
Accommodation and breakfast will be provided for $2.00 per person
per night. This fee will go to your host. The host’s name, address
and phone number will be provided. We will attempt to arrange
pet-free or non-smoker accommodation for those who are allergic to
pets/smoke. If your are travelling with a group, please let the
registrar know so that you and your companions can be housed close to
each other. You must provide your own sleeping bags and other gear.
If you need this service, please register for it when you register
for classes.

General Information
All fees must be paid in advance before class sessions begin. No
classes may be audited. This is a long-standing policy of Ithra.
Class limits are chosen by the instructor.
The Matriculation Fee, which covers cost of the Compendium and
maintaining the records of classes the student attains, is $2.00 and
is only paid the first time the student registers for an Ithra class.
The Registration Fee, covers operating costs and is in addition to
the Matriculation Fee. At this session, this fee is $7.00. If fees
do not accompany the registration form, you will not be registered.
If you register late and the classes are filled, you will receive a
refund. Supplies are handled by the instructors.
Bed and Breakfast: Floor space/breakfast for $2.00 per person per
night. The host’s name, address/phone number will be provided. We
will attempt to arrange pet-free/non-smoker accommodation for those
who are allergic. If you are travelling with a group, let the
registrar know so you & your companions can be housed close to each
other. You must provide your own sleeping bags & other gear.
