From the Event Steward

As Ursulmas grows, the requests for space grows as well. The
part that does not is the space itself. Space is given first to
Crown, then Principalities and then Baronies. We ask that Baronies
open to the idea of sharing space. Know that Baronial space is
given on a first come first served basis. I suggest you send a
Baronial Rep to claim space sometime on Friday evening. As always,
we will do everything in our power to accommodate all.

Volunteers

Nothing happens without you!

Ursulmas is a gargantuan event on par with many of An Tir’s
Crown-level events. Our guest totals average about 1400–1600
people through the door in a single weekend. We always need a few
folks willing to add a few hours of assistance in Gate, water
bearing, field heraldry, lists, parking, setup & tear down.

If you believe you can offer some of your time to help out,
contact us at ursulmas-volunteers@aquaterra.antir.sca.org.
We thank you in advance for your help!

Where Can You Help Out?

Armor Drop

Armor drop will be at the North doors.

Access to the Armor Drop doors will be limited to pre-reg/paid
attendees who can check in at the north door and proceed to drop
gear or those who show a Site Token.

Doors open at 8 am, and close promptly at 10:30 am with armor
inspection completing at 11 am.

Those who enter the Grandstands Gate by 10 am may also use the
Armor Drop by showing their site token upon arrival at the North
doors. Pre-reg/paid intake will close at the North doors after
10:30 am – Site Tokens required.

Heavy Armored Combat

One of the most well-known and widely-enjoyed activities in the
SCA is armored combat. Our warriors participate in tournaments for
individuals and teams, tactical melees involving dozens of
combatants, and even large-scale wars with thousands of
participants! Unlike reenactments of battles from history, our
combat activities are unchoreographed and the outcome is entirely
based on the skill and training of the combatants involved.

Combat in the Society is based on a system of honor and
chivalry. Because the combat is full speed and unchoreographed, the
combatants themselves determine if the attacks they receive were
successful based on the angle, location, and force of the strike.
Safety officers, known as marshals, are always on hand to ensure
that the combat is performed safely and to ensure that all
equipment used meets established safety standards.

Final Tournaments, Formats, Rules and Schedule

The honor and glory of Chivalric battle will be presented
throughout the weekend with various combat events to enter and
behold!

See the full heavy armored combat schedule

To pre-register for the lists, please send the
following information in a NEW message to ursulmas-lists@aquaterra.antir.sca.org:

  • Your SCA name
  • Your modern name
  • Your fighting titles
  • Fight practices that you regularly attend
  • Which Ursulmas tournaments you will be fighting in

Then once at Ursulmas, all you need to do is check-in (with site
token) and off to armor inspection!

Heavy Ursulmas Championship

The greatest honor is won in single combat upon the field of
battle. With the faith of their inspirations, under the eyes of the
nobility, these warriors will do battle and win glory. They will
face their worthy opponents, and their victory will be all the
sweeter when it is hard-won.

Our events continue on Sunday with the advent of tournaments for
the newly armored and inexperienced as well as the wizened warriors
who refuse to give up their sport.

Gideon de Noirville Over-40 Tournament (heavy)

Squire Gideon Hrafensfuri (formerly de Noirville),
Aquaterra’s first Sargeant-at-Arms, has sponsored a heavy
tournament at Ursulmas for many years. In previous years as the
sponsor, Gideon has always provided an incredible prize for the
winner. This year is no exception being a milestone in
long-standing traditions.

This Tournament has grown to be a Sunday morning favorite, as
many of the competitors are long-standing luminaries in the combat
community. Many warriors who have seen the glory of victorious
battle, now feel the wheel of time upon them as their fellows try,
yet again, to best them upon the field of combat with chivalry,
skill and wisdom. Come join the fun or don your armor for one more
friendly bout.

Period Kit Tournament (Sunday)

An opportunity to show our guests that we can participate in our
sport and look period doing it!

Rules for the Period Kit Tournament at Ursulmas 2017
– No visible plastics (basket hilts and shield bosses exempt)
– No visible modern sporting equipment or logos
– Documentation of your kit! Describe the time frame and
inspiration as well as the anachronistic safety precautions to make
your kit work.

Please watch this video for additional details and information.

The prize is $50 gift ‘stick’ to Sir Torfin’s Etsy store!

Please submit your period kit documentation to the
tournament organizers, Gabhin and Andromacha, at ursulmas-periodkit@aquaterra.antir.sca.org,
by Saturday, January 28th
.

Rapier Combat

Rapier combat in the Society attempts to recreate styles of
swordfighting from the later part of the Middle Ages, often based
on manual and theories of combat that have survived to this
day.

Rapier combat uses a foundation of style and finesse that has
since evolved into the modern sport of fencing. Unlike the modern
sport, our combat uses a wide variety of weapons and body
protection and our combat takes place with freedom of movement in
any direction.

Rapier combat can be found in both tournaments of individual and
team combatants and in larger melees and wars!

Like armored combat, rapier combat in the Society is based on a
system of honor and chivalry.

Because the combat is full speed and unchoreographed, the
combatants themselves determine if the attacks they receive were
successful based on the angle, location, and force of the
strike.

Safety officers, known as marshals, are always on hand to ensure
that the combat is performed safely and to ensure that all
equipment used meets established safety standards.

combat, please contact ursulmas-rapier@aquaterra.antir.sca.org

Arts & Sciences

Crafting is one of the most common activities in the Society!
Our artisans study and create works from nearly every type of craft
from the Middle Ages. Collectively, we call the study of the
various production, research, and performing crafts, “arts &
sciences.” At many Society events, you will be able to watch
artisans recreating these crafts and often take classes and
workshops where you can learn to do them yourself. Some of our
events are entirely dedicated to demonstrating and learning
medieval crafts!

Best Dressed Bear Contest

Saturday the traditional Best Dressed Bear Contest will also be
taking place. The contest for the best-dressed bear is a
celebration of the whimsical side of Sir Ursul, Patron Saint of Aquaterra. At this
celebration of Ursulmas, we invite adults and youth to bring their
bear (or other stuffed animal) attired in period SCA Garb that best
represents an image from the tales of Sir Ursul.

Contest Requirements

Any stuffed animal will be accepted, but bears will have the
advantage. The bear’s clothing (or armor) must be made by the
contest entrant and cannot have been entered in any previous
Ursulmas contest. Bears should be labeled with the artisan’s name.
No further documentation is required.

There will be two categories of competition:
Youth (under 15) and Adult (16
and up)

This should be a fun competition for both adults and youth. Be
sure to bring your entries to the Ursulwyck village!

Drop-off opens at 9am, judging is at 3pm, and stuffed animals
can be picked up after 5pm.

Sciences, please contact ursulmas-arts@aquaterra.antir.sca.org

Costumes

From the simplest tunics to the most amazing Renaissance
ensembles, a love of medieval clothing runs throughout the
Society!

“What should I wear?” is one of the very first questions from
people experiencing the SCA for the first time. The short answer is
a comfortable tunic (long enough to be a dress for ladies) and
pants (a belt is optional).

As a person new to the SCA, we understand that you can’t
simply run down to your local store to purchase these items, but
have no fear! You have options. One office in the local group is
the Chatelaine (also
called Hospitaller or Gold Key), who acts to
welcome newcomers and to help you get started. One of their tasks
is to maintain “loaner garb,” a trove of medieval-style clothing in
various sizes which are available for loan until you can create
your own wardrobe.

The SCA covers over a millenium of history and offers a wide
variety of clothing promising to suit every taste and whim.

If you’re interested in learning more about costuming, the

Aquaterra Costumer’s Guild
connects people who love to
sew and create costumes and helps people learn to create period
clothing for wearing at events.

Bards & Entertainers

The performing arts in the middle ages brought news, lifted
spirits, and at times provided needed levity to life. Please come
and enjoy the wonderful performances of our wandering bardic
performers throughout the day!

In ages past, a sign of education and well-rounded knowledge in
the Middle Ages included music education, instruction in a musical
instrument or several, current dance and poetry.

The Ursulmas Medieval Faire hosts many performers of various
varieties. We have had musicians, dancers, theatre troupes and
orators re-creating the bardic arts and entertainment from many
different geographic locations in the Middle Ages.

The Society of Creative Anachronism has many of its own
traditions. At our events the Bardic Circle occurs at almost every
event in the Kingdom of An Tir, which is an evening gathering,
where people gather to listen to and sing songs, listen to stories
and enjoy the company of their fellow bards.

entertainers, please contact ursulmas-bardic@aquaterra.antir.sca.org

Games & Pastimes

The history of games goes back to the ancient civilizations, but
games really blossomed in the Middle Ages, and they’re some
of the favorite activities we do in the Society!

Many of our modern games have origins spanning from hundreds to
even thousands of years in the past.

Some of the most popular games that will be available to play
are standard chess, Byzantine chess, alquerque (predecessor to
checkers), backgammon, Nine Men’s Morris, mancala, cribbage,
game of the goose, Hnefatafl, and many more.

The games table is located in the Ursulwyck
medieval village
.

pastimes, please contact ursulmas-games@aquaterra.antir.sca.org

Youth and Family Activities

A call goes out across the land for all of An Tir’s most
noble and chivalrous young warriors. It is time once again for the
Saint Ursul Youth Armored Combat (YAC) Tournament.
Come see these mighty young fighters test their skill against one
another, vying for honor among their peers while demonstrating
their skills to potential new combatants.

The YAC eric will be open from 10am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday
for kids ages 2 to 99 to come play with our public participation
weapons any time the field is not being used for the Tournament or
Melee.

All activities require that the youth be accompanied by a
parent or legal guardian able to sign a medical waiver
.

Sign in at Lists will start at 10:00 am Saturday at the YAC
information area with the tournament starting at noon.

Entrants must provide their own gear and be accompanied by a
parent or legal guardian with the properly signed waiver (blank
waivers will be available). YAC Fighter Authorization cards are not
required to enter however there will be an opportunity to have one
issued following the tournament.

Have you never had the chance to see if youth and energy really
beat old age and treachery? Come as you are and find out at the
Youth Armored Workshop at 3pm on Saturday. See
future knights try on armor for the first time, and cheer for their
first victory in honorable single combat against their peers.

Any youth ages 6-17 accompanied by a parent or legal
guardian able to sign a medical waiver are welcome. No experience
or equipment required.

On Sunday thrill to the challenge of a YAC Mixed Weapons
Melee
; scheduled for 10:00 am Sunday at the YAC Erics. Any
warrior brave enough to enter will have the use of various weapons
and the encouragement (and instruction) of former YAC fighters in
the art of mixed battles. Come enter for the fun, the glory or the
chance of being immortalized through song by our wandering
bards.

Living History

Walk through the Gate of the Ursulmas Medieval Faire and
experience the Ursulwyck medieval village. You will be welcomed
into the house and see how the people lived. Then tour the village
and encounter skilled crafts-people as they create wondrous and
useful items of everyday life in the middle ages.

Visit the tailor’s shop, the apothecary, the Moneyers, and
the Scribes. Watch practiced hands create everything from glass
beads and wood carvings to woven goods and needlework. Maybe sit a
spell in the Publick House or join others as they play games that
span the ages. You may also borrow some Medieval clothes as you
enjoy your day with us—-our Newcomer Guide
(Chatelaine) will help you.

The Ursulwyck medieval village will be located in the
Grandstands building; the same building where with the Gate where
you pay your entrance fee and pick up your site token.

Archery

Come and enjoy fine archery contests and tests of skill!

One of the most important skills throughout the timeframe that
we recreate, archery was used for hunting, practice, and especially
war. Archery played an important role in many a battle and many
cultures depended upon their innovative and skilled archers for
defense as well as a means of conquest.

Archery at the Ursulmas Medieval Faire is open to everyone,
including our modern guests! Loaner gear and instruction for adults
and children (ages 5+) are available on Saturday and Sunday. Please
ask the Target Archery Marshal (TAM) on duty for times and
availability.

The range will be closed to guests at a time yet to be
determined so that our SCA participants may compete for the
Ursulmas archery championship. The range schedule will be finalized
and updated as the event draws closer.

If bringing your own archery tackle, be advised we shoot into
straw bales and arrow pass-throughs are a possibility with higher
poundage bows (70+ lbs.), so, please, only traditional recurve bows
and longbows allowed on the range; no compound bows.

No archery is allowed without a TAM running the
line.

Archery Competition Details

Ursulmas Archery Competition
The Ursulmas Archery Competition this year will be a modified ‘coin
shoot,’ in which cunning will be just as important as accuracy.
Each competitor will get a ‘coin’ (Yellow portion of a standard
target), and a number of pieces of currency equal to the number of
competitors. Each competitor will put their initials on their coin,
and place it on the target bales in a location of their liking.
Each time their coin is hit, they will pay the person who hit it,
one of their pieces of currency. This currency can also be used to
make deals, like paying an archer to not hit their coin, andor pay
an archer to target a specific person’s coin (these deals can
happen without currency exchange as well). It should be used wisely
however, as the two archers with the most currency after 6 rounds,
will be put against each other in a very challenging accuracy shoot
to determine the winner.

Ursulmas Youth Archery Competition
There will be an Ursulmas Youth Archery Competition this year! We
must have 3 or more participants for it to happen, so please
encourage your young lords and ladies to come shoot! Having their
own gear is encouraged, as we have a limited stock of loaner gear,
but we do have loaner gear! Participants must demonstrate
competence on the range; i.e. they must know range rules, and have
had instruction and practice prior to the event – we just won’t
have enough people to be able to help or instruct while running the
competition. The youth competition will be a contest of attrition!
Youth archers will randomly pair up with other youth archers, and
each fire one arrow at a target. The archer who shoots closest to
the center is the winner of the round. The archer who shoots the
furthest away from the center loses the round, and one of their
arrows! The last archer to have arrows remaining is the winner
(each archer starts with 6 arrows).

Grumpy Archer Competition (over 40)
The Grumpy Archer competition is going to consist of LARGE
EASY-TO-SEE targets. Archers will have to shoot through various
handicaps, including sitting down (to rest weary knees), wearing
vision impairing goggles (or maybe we’ll just have them take their
existing glasses off), a ridiculously large glove (hands just don’t
work like they used to), and the constant interruption of ‘nurses’
(fellow participants will be given the freedom, and encouragement,
to distract, safely, the archers on the line – candy, or other
food, and waterdrinks may be presented as ‘medicine’ that the
archers must take). We will score normally, one round each, at the
20, 30, and 40 yard ranges; the archer with the highest score will
be the winner.

Missile Combat Tournament

See the missle combat schedule

Format will be similar to last year (duel) with some added
twists.  Combatants will be limited to a total of twelve
arrows, bolts, combat thrown weapons, or any combination thereof on
the field.  Standard SCA legal striking areas will apply.

For more information on the Ursulmas Medieval Faire’s target and
combat archery, please contact ursulmas-archery@aquaterra.antir.sca.org

Thrown Weapons

Come and enjoy fine thrown weapons contests and tests of
skill!

In addition to the target competition found in archery, we also
recreate additional target weapons styles. At many Society events,
you can find opportunities to try throwing common medieval weapons
such as axes, knives, and spears, all in a safe, monitored
environment.

Thrown weapons (knife, axe, spear) at the Ursulmas Medieval
Faire is open to everyone, including our modern guests! Loaner gear
and instruction for adults and children (ages 9+) are available on
Saturday and Sunday. Please ask the Thrown Weapons Marshal (TWM) on
duty for times and availability.

The range will be closed to guests at a time yet to be
determined so that our SCA participants may compete for the
Ursulmas thrown weapons championship. The range schedule will be
finalized and updated as the event draws closer.

If bringing your own thrown weapons tackle, be advised that all
weapons intended for throwing must be inspected by the TWM to make
sure they meet our safety standards.

  • Knives: Knives must be between 10 and 16
inches in length, and not more than 2.5 inches wide. Knives are to
have only one sticking point and must have the traditional shape of
    a knife.
  • Axes: All axes shall have wooden handles
between 12 inches and 24 inches in length. All axe heads shall be
metal, with a single blade of not more than four (4) inches in
width on the striking edge. No top spikes, spike polls, or
    butt-spiked handles are allowed.
  • Spears: The spearhead must have a width of no
more than 2-1/2 inches and the haft must be between 4 and 7 feet in
    overall length

No thrown weapons are allowed without a TWM running the
line.

Thrown Weapons Competition Details

On Saturday, starting right after court, the thrown weapons
range will be open to the public until 1pm.

At 1pm, the range will be closed to the public so that we may
entertain you with our “Barely a Thrown Weapon” tournament. The
thrown weapons marshal-in-charge will determine if each
participant’s weapon is something that normally wouldn’t be thrown,
yet could stick in the target if thrown. There will be multiple
competitions with these “barely a thrown weapon” weapons.

4pm to closing court the range will be open as long as there is
a TWM available.

On Sunday, from 9am – 10am, the range will be closed to the
public so that participants in the Ursulmas Challenge can warm
up.

The Ursulmas Challenge runs from 10am to 1pm. It will consist of
Royal Rounds (so that participants can score for their average) and
some novelty challenges.

At 1pm, the thrown weapons range will close to make room for the
combat archery tournament.

Volunteers Needed!

If you believe you can offer some of your time to help out,
contact our Volunteer
Coordinator
. We thank you in advance for your
help!
