The Shire of Mountain Edge (Yamhill County, OR) invites you to
the 2011 Kingdom Heraldic Symposium, an event hosted by the Shire
in celebration of An Tir’s 30^th year as the most
glorious Kingdom in the Known World!

Heralds near and far – come ye to the classes prepared for you
on Saturday and the Heraldic Consultation and Research Techniques
small groups on Sunday. Contact Argent Scroll argent-scroll@antir.sca.org 
 for the class information (or to volunteer to teach a class).
Pre-registration is NOT required but we encourage pre-registration
for classes by email to Argent Scroll. The autocrats would much
appreciate an email from attendees in order to plan the snacks and
the light lunches (included in the site fee). Please advise the
autocrats in that email of any dietary restrictions you may have.
Allergen alerts: both sites have peanuts/peanut oil/peanut butter
exposure “opportunities” and the Sunday site also has dog, cat,
horse, sheep, and llama dander on site as well as a fine crop of
summer grasses and late summer weeds.

for Friday and/or Saturday nights.

Community Center site opens at 9AM on Saturday and closes at
6:00 pm on Saturday. Sunday site opens at 9AM and closes at 5PM.
Wireless Internet access is provided at Sunday site for heraldic
consults/research.

NOTE: $5.00 NMS fee applies to all non-member adults.

ARE YOU ACCEPTABLE TO THE CROWN?

Herald, Sable Mountain Herald for Their Majesties Thorin &
Dagmaer

What qualities do Their Majesties need and look for in a Court
Herald?  What bad habits have you developed?  What good
habits have you not mastered?  

This will be a frank discussion about why who is and, more
importantly, who isn’t chosen to herald for the Crown.
 Discussion will be based on the first section of Don’t
Panic – the Pocket Guide to Court Heraldry, which was
developed with the help of many royal retinues, and on comments
received from past Royalty.  Please bring an open mind, a
willingness to learn and note taking materials. 

Minimum 1, no maximum, no fee.

HOW TO RUN TOWN CRY

(this class will be held upstairs – not ADA accessible)

Ever been herald in charge and not know what to do with town
cry? Do you hate sending town cries every 10 minutes? This class
will help give you some tips and tools to help town cry go smoother
at small and large events.

Intermediate Voice Heraldry — Making Your Voice Work
for You

Instructor: HL Natasha Orionova Zateeva

Cost: $3

Class size: 1 min/ 10 max

If you are a voice herald, or would like to be, this class will
help you understand how to make your voice work for you. We will
work to identify and refine the skills needed to make a more
theatrical, and thus more interesting, court, field, or town cry
presentation.

Proposed subjects for discussion include projection versus
volume, proper breathing, voice inflection, vocal timbre,
vocabulary, and making boring announcements interesting.

Students should bring note-taking materials and be ready to make
some noise!

This is a four hour class and ends at 5PM.

ORDER AND AWARD NAMES

This class will be held upstairs. This is not an ADA-accessible
class. Please contact the autocrat prior to the event if special
arrangements need be made.

In this class, we’ll look at period examples and current
precedent to help figure out how to create award and order names
that will pass quickly and easily.

ACHIEVEMENTS FOR SCROLLS

Instructor will give information on achievements for An Tir
armigerous awards, various examples of heraldic achievements in
manuscripts and medieval documents, and examples of achievements
for non-heraldic cultures as well as lead a discussion on how to
put it all together. Handout/CD $1.00. Students should bring note
taking materials and are recommended to bring a registered device
of someone they know who has as a minimum an AoA (higher award is
fine).

CLEARING CONFLICT WHILE STAYING WITHIN PERIOD
STYLE

This class will look at ways to clear conflict under the SCA
rules, but staying within period style.  We will be looking at
creating CDs beyond the addition of a bordure or a chief while
keeping as much integrity of the client’s desired arms as
possible

HOW TO RUN HERALD’S  POINT

This class will be held upstairs. This is not ADA accessible
-please contact the autocrat prior to the event is you need
accomodation.

This class will cover how to be the herald in charge and run
heralds point. This won’t cover Town cry, field, or court
heraldry other than how to organize them and to delegate.

Min 1 max as many as want to take it. Please bring note taking
materials.

BASIC HERALDRY

This class will be held upstairs. This is not ADA
accessible -please contact the autocrat prior to the event is you
need accomodation.

This class will cover the basics of designing a coat of arms and
blazon and then play around with creating and coloring devices.

Teacher Earc Mountain Edge

SUNDAY (NOTE ALTERNATE SITE LOCATION!)

IMPORTANT: the entire Sunday site is an equestrian practice site
(per SCA insurance) and therefore everyone must sign the equestrian
waiver at gate (even though there is no separate charge for
Sunday). IF you are bringing a minor for whom you are not the
parent or legal guardian, you must bring with you all the paperwork
required for any event PLUS the parent or legal guardian’s
signature on the Oregon equestrian roster-style waiver. Please
contact the autocrat if you need that emailed to you.

MORNING: Site opens at 9AM

Small group meetings and possible heraldic consults (Internet
access available) – please confirm with Argent Scroll

10AM Black Lion Meeting

NOON: light lunch for participants

1:30 PM to 4PM

MOUNTED TOWN CRY PRACTICE

Minimum students: 1

Maximum: 8 ( 2 horses available that are safe, possibly a third)
so we need to make sure everyone it at least comfortable being led
in the ceremonial fashion if they aren’t riders. It really CAN be
safe and fun, please consider trusting your Equestrian Marshall in
Charge at the event)

Recommended: closed toe shoes with heels, for adults there are
loaner safety helmets if needed (some life insurance policies
require those).

IMPORTANT: Anyone under 18 MUST have their parent/legal guardian
present and the parent/legal guardian must ensure they have closed
toe heeled foot gear and approve (ideally provide) the required
safety helmet for their minor. 

Wear clothes that can get dirty.
