Winter.  A time to enjoy the finer
things in life within the cosy walls of a hall and among warm
friends.   On this day we shall choose our newest
Defender of Arts & Sciences, learn about the skilled and
graceful art of dance, enjoy each other’s talents in a
potluck feast and rounding out the day with a tavern and even
more dance.

A&S DEFENDER
TOURNEY
The time draws near where Lions Gate must
choose a new Defender of Arts & Sciences.  Are you
worthy of such an honour?  Contact Lions Gate’s current
A&S Defender, Her Ladyship Aelana Cordovera, if you wish
to compete. 

Details of the Lions Gate Arts and
Sciences Defender Tourney 2010 were announced December 21,
2009 and they are as follows:

This year’s competition has two
parts:

First: One entry – art or science
object worth a possible 100 points. (judging forms to be 60%
based on art and 40% based on documentation)

Second: An additional page of
documentation on the submitter’s persona and how the entry
relates to such. Worth a possible 30 points.

Judging criteria for the first
entry:

PART ONE

1.  ART (total 60
points)

 A.)  Visual (10
points)

• – Initial
  impression 1-5 points
• – Display 1-5
  points

B.)  Authenticity of design and
process (25 points)

• – Final piece
  looks historically accurate 1-5 points
• – Design of
  object makes use of period styles, cuts, shapes,
  silhouettes, space 1-5 points
• – Period methods
  used in creating the piece 1-5 points
• – Period
  materials used in creating the piece 1-5
  points
• – Processes used
  were appropriate to the final piece. 1-5
  points

C.)  Technical Ability (10
points)

• – Overall
  finished quality of the piece, entrant demonstrated a
  mastery of techniques, materials, execution.

  the piece (15 points)
• – Process
  involved in creating the piece was time consuming 1-5

• – A large amount

All dance classes will take place in
the Red Room and there is no pre-registration or extra charges to
attend.  Just
show up, learn and have fun!   Please
note that this schedule may be subject to

POTLUCK FEAST
An
informal potluck feast will be had so please bring a dish to
feed at least 10 people if you wish to participate.  As
for what specifically to bring – according to the first
letter of your mundane last name:

S-Z:     Salads,
breads, cheese, pickles
A-D:     Rice, pasta and taters
E-J:      Meats
K-M:     All things veggie
N-R:     Desserts

Participants are encouraged to bring a
copy of their recipe or at least to note if their dish has
any common allergens in it (ie. nuts, wheat, dairy). 
This is only a guide so if you have something that is your
specialty and/or are dying to try a period dish, by all means
go ahead and do so.

THE WOLF & DRUM
TAVERN
NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL PERMITTED as a
privately-run tavern, with their own liquor licence, will be
open for business in the evening brought to you by Anika and
Morweena.

AN EVENING BALL
Now
that you are educated in the wonderful ways of the dancer,
it’s time to put those newly acquired skills to work. 
As preparations for the evening ball begin, dancers wishing
to partake will be given a card with a number on it. This can
be then pinned or displayed on their person.  Ladies
will receive even numbers and Lords will receive odd
numbers. 

Beginning at 7:30pm, there will be a
number of pre-determined dance sets that will be
completed.  In each set, one of the dances will be a
mystery dance and numbers will be called at random.  The
person who has that number will then come onto the dance area
and will be taught a dance.  The other dances can be for
anyone who wants to dance.

Set 1:  7:30 to 8:00pm
Set 2:  8:15 to 8:45pm
Set 3:  9:00 to 9:30pm
Set 4:  9:45 to 10:15pm
