sumptuous, not to be missed, GARLIC FEAST!!! Every remove
will feature garlic in some way, including dessert (trust me,
you’ll like it), however for the slightly less
aromatically inclined, a non-garlic dish will also be
available with each remove. Menu will be posted closer to the
date.

Basic Fingerloop
Braiding with Lady Myrrim: This technique for
making fancy braiding for lacing, baldrics, clothing
decoration and strings for pouches was very popular in
13th century Medieval Europe. (although
there is evidence that it is even more ancient than
this) I will demonstrate some simple braid patterns
for the students and teach them how to read patterns so
that they can go on to do more complex things.
Students will receive a handout and practice.

Anglo-Saxon Poetry
with Hlaford Wulfstan Hrafnsson: An introduction to
Anglo-Saxon poetry, circa 800-1066, with a look at
documentary resources, the original language and
considerations for SCA performance and competition. Kids
are ok if over 12 or accompanied by an adult

Introduction to Card
Weaving with Archos Morweena: This class is for
the beginner card weaver and will feature how to get
started in card weaving without a loom (and without tying
yourself to your work). In this class we will cover uses
for card woven trim, threading and patterns, as well as
discussing some options for getting started (looms, how
to make your own tablets). Cost of class includes 8
tablets, enough crochet cotton for an in-class sampler,
and a hand-out with some simple threaded in patterns to
get you inspired and started.

Survey of Indian
Costume with Baroness Anastasia Alexandrovna
Andreeva: This will cover the evolution of Indian
costume. It is a big subject so only some regions will be
covered. This is a general look at clothing in India
during the SCA period. Both male and female clothing will
be covered.

Late Period Japanese
Clothing with Maeda no Kiku Mariko: The class will
cover the clothing of the Muromachi and Momoyama periods
(1333-1603 CE) from all walks of life from peasant to
palace courtier. Topics will include: the undergarments,
basic outfits, outerwear, footwear and accessories;
colour and fabric choice; sumptuary laws, period and SCA;
common misconceptions of Japanese garb; recommended
resources. The handout will include pattern drafting and
construction techniques to make the basic elements of
late period Japanese garb (kosode, hakama, obi and
tabi). If time allows, a short discussion will
follow the lecture portion of the class.

Period Arrow-Making
with Lady Jacqueline LeFleur & HL Arcos James
Wolfden: Learn the history of how arrows were made during
the 1200s in what is now known as Britain. We’ll be
taking these techniques and adapting them for SCA-legal
period arrows. Learn how to choose arrow length, cut
string nocks, orient and attach fletching, and attach
points. You will leave the class with a completed period
arrow.

Intro to Cut and Thrust
Combat with Don Estaban Ferreiro: This will be a
contact class. All attendees should be able to, and
have a willingness to do combat. There will be a
short introduction to the rules. Some drilling for
safety when fighting with steel weapons, then well
observed, well marshalled free fighting. Bring an open
mind and a ready sword arm! Whether you fight
armoured combat or rapier, attendees are to bring their
armour. Especially rigid knee and elbow protection,
rigid back of head protection and sturdy, rigid gauntlets
if possible. Steel weapons – most Rapier weapons
are fine. There
will be some armour provided by the class, but everyone
is always more comfortable in their own gear.

The Skald in Norse
Culture with HL Sionann in ui Fhlaithbheartaig:
This is a lecture and discussion class examining the
interesting societal position/s and purpose held by the
Skald in Norse period culture. We will also discuss
comparisons to other cultures and periods and how it all
fits into the SCA. Please bring your voice,
knowledge and enthusiasm to share… and note taking
material if you wish. Ages 12 and up welcome.

Finishing Techniques with Mistress Agnes
Cresewyke: We will be looking at seams, seam finishing,
handmade buttons and buttonholes, eyelets, cardweaving on
sleeve edges, and dagging. Course fee Will include
handout with diagrams and materials for practicing some
of the techniques so that the students will go home with
practical samples. (CLASS FULL)

Basket-weaving in the
Middle Ages with Malie Rennick: Baskets have been
used from ancient times to carry everything from water,
to food to goods for the market. Students will
learn how to make a late-period market display basket
from reed. Basic basket weaving skills will be
taught, with resources given to continue study. Students
will leave the class with a small basket of their
own.

Knotwork Bains Method Level
One with Dame Elena de Maisnilwarin: This basic
knotwork class will show you how to make wonderful
patterns of knots in a very short time. By beginning with
easy steps, all students will be drawing knots by the end
of the class. A handout and all materials will be
supplied by instructor. If you’ve taken “Basic Knotwork”
or “Knotwork Method One Level One” from this instructor –
this is the same course, simply renamed. No children
under 13.

An Tir Heraldic
Submissions with HL Caitrina inghean Andriasia:
Ever wondered why the registration process for names and
devices seems to take so long? It may be confusing, but
it need not be cryptic to the average gentle. Caitrina
inghean Aindriasa, former Lions Blood of An Tir will
explain the process in detail, answer any questions you
may have and will assist in getting anyone wanting to get
on road to Heraldic registration. A handout will be
available as well as blank forms to get you
started. Ceara Black Talbot will be on hand to
accept any completed packets to save submitters on
mailing costs. The $10 per Heraldic Submission via
cheque made out to the An Tir College of Heralds applies
to anyone wishing to get their submissions processed on
site. This course would be valuable to new Branch Heralds
and Submitters alike.

Archery Battles in the
Hundred Years War with Archos James Wolfden:
Crecy! Poiters! Azincort! It was these three battles that
reputation of the English Archer was established. This
course will look at the role of the archer in the 100
Years War by examining these battles and others.
How did France respond? Were the English Archers really
that good or were the French Knights really that bad? How
devastating was the arrow storm? Course will include a
printed student guide.

Intro to Giocomo di Grassi
(intermediate-level class) with Lord Warwick
Drakkar: There will be combat taking place as the
attendees will be introduced to the relatively new Arte
of Cut and Thrust combat and hot it pertains to one of
the European Masters of Defence. This will be a
combat, contact class. We will survey DiGrassi’s
philosophy of the Arte then study his single sword and
sword and shield techniques. Bring an open mind and a
ready sword arm! Whether you fight Armoured Combat
or Rapier, attendees are to bring their armour.
Especially Rigid knee and elbow protection, rigid back of
head protection and sturdy, rigid gauntlets (hockey
gloves will work ) if possible. Roller blade knee
and elbow pads work well. Steel weapons – Most
Rapier weapons are fine, a buckler will be used as well.
There will be some armour provided by the class, but
everyone is always more comfortable in their own
gear.

The Lute and its
Music with Master Stephen of Humanby: This class
will cover the history of the lute with extant examples
of lute music from the medieval era. We will also cover
ideas for playing lute music on modern instruments such
as the guitar.

Nalbinding with HL
Geira inn Harfagra: This is an absolute beginner class.
If you have any nalbinding knowledge already, this may
not be for you. We will learn a variant of the York
stitch, and work towards making a mitten. For those with
allergies, please be aware that we will be using 100%
merino wool. Students should bring a pair of scissors,
and note-taking material if desired. A second class will
be added if there is enthusiasm. (CLASS FULL)

Turkish Clothing with HE Safiye Hatun: Basics of
16th century Ottoman Turkish clothing. Covers garment
cuts, fabrics, colours, class, and accessories. Extensive
handout provided.

Introduction to
Bookbinding with HL Aelana Cordovera: A discussion
of historical bookbinding materials and techniques.
Samples of books from earliest times will be
available to handle. Students will fold paper into
quires, sew and cover a basic paper book. All tools will
be supplied, but students may bring ruler, pencil, bone
folder, triangle, awl if they have them on hand.

How to be an
Autocrat with Lady Ceara inghean ui Mhadadhain:
Attention all Autocrats – new and experienced! Ever
wanted to run an event but found the prospect of doing it
a little too daunting? Want to brush up and dust
off those event coordinator skills? This course
will take you through the steps of being an Autocrat from
event idea conception right through to the post-event
paperwork. We’ll talk about doing events at the
various levels too – Kingdom, Principality, Barony and
Shire. Students will be provided with an extensive
guide to take away with them which will contain all that
is discussed and more so that you don’t have to take
notes. You can just sit, listen, ask questions and
absorb.

Quiver Construction
with Archos Margaret Hamilton of Stirlingshire: In this
course we will discuss various Arrow Quiver styles seen
through the Middle Ages and their construction techniques
and materials. Included are two patterns. This class can
be used as credit toward the Marshallate Degree – Archery
offered by the University of Tir Righ. Bring pen for note
taking.

Introduction to Joachim
Meyer’s system of German Longsword with Dom
Alvarro Ferreiro: There will be combat taking place as
the attendees will be introduced to the relatively new
Arte of Cut and Thrust combat and hot it pertains to one
of the European Masters of Defence. This will be a
combat, contact class. We will survey Meyer’s
Longsword techniques and fighting with a steel longsword.
Bring an open mind and a ready sword arm! Weather
they fight Armoured combat or Rapier, attendees are to
bring their armour. Especially Rigid knee and elbow
protection, rigid back of head protection and sturdy,
rigid gauntlets if possible. Paul Chen Practical
hand and a Half Swords or other bated two handed sword.

Music Appreciation – the
Silk Road and Beyond with HL Shareef Musiqui al
Rashid: This course is a survey of music in the Medieval
thru Renaissance time period including the study of
elements and forms of music, selected musical works,
music terminology, important musical genres, periods, and
composers, as well as introduction to some musical
instruments of the time period. This will
include excursuses by the instructor on theories
behind how music evolved on the Silk Road and was seen in
multiple geographical regions of Europe and Asia
Minor.FYI: There will be technology in this course,
including cd players and or computers. There just are not
enough instrumentalists in Vancouver for an
entire period experience.

Beginners Bobbin
Lace with Mistress Elizabeth Braidwood: Making
bobbin lace looks impressively complicated, but it’s
actually quite simple. By the end of this class you’ll
have learned the basic stitches as you work a bookmark
sampler, and you’ll have a pretty good idea if this is a
craft you want to pursue. Instructor will provide:
Student lace boards (“pillow”), pattern (“pricking”),
bobbins pre-loaded with thread, and handout. Students
should bring: Stick pins, scissors suitable for cutting
thread, note-taking materials.

Blackwork for
Beginners with HL Elspeth Selwode: An introduction
to the beautiful and delicate art of blackwork
embroidery. All you need is the ability to thread a
needle and count to two and a desire to learn – and I can
help you with the needle! The course will cover the
basic stitches, threading techniques, charting designs,
some specialty stitches to enhance the appearance of your
work and a discussion of materials. Students will
be given a small project utilising the techniques taught
and which can be finished in a short period of
time. All materials provided, but please bring a
pencil.

Wool-on-wool
Applique with HE Caitrin ni Cingeadh: Add simple
or intricate designs to your bag, tunic, coat,
cloak or whatever. Students will learn modern
methods and tricks to transfer images on to wool pieces
then use period stitches to attack them onto desired
articles. Instructor will have fabric, supplies, and
designs to copy but students are encouraged to bring
their own as well as scissors, needles, and any wool
fabric bits, yarn, tapestry wool, etc. If
anyone has an opaque or tracing projector please bring it
along.

Persona Development
with Baroness Anastasia Alexandrovna Andreeva: We will
have a worksheet to start with, and we will start
creating a persona for each person in class. Come
prepared with an idea of what you want and we will all
try and help put it together. Places to look for the
information will be covered and lots of ideas to help you
create a persona for the SCA. Please bring writing
utensils.
