The University of Tir Righ is pleased to announce the classes
for the Shire of Lionsdale’s Fall University Session to be
held October 25th and 26th in Chilliwack, BC.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25: 9 AM

The Staff of Life: Bread in the Middle
Ages
Instructor: Mistress Rowenna de Roncesvalles
Cost: $4     Length: 4
hours     Min 3, max 8
Class Description: An in-depth look at the types of bread in
the Middle Ages as well as the grains used. Examples of these
breads will be available for tasting and we will also be
making manchet and scones. Learn the secrets of breadmaking
and how really easy it is! Notes and recipes will be
supplied. Students will need to wear sleeves that roll up and
an apron.

Introduction to Nalbinding
Instructor: Lady Geira inn hárfagra

Class Description: This is an absolute beginner class. If you
have any nalbinding knowledge already, this may not be for
you. We will learn a variant of the York stitch, and work
towards making a mitten. For those with allergies, please be
aware that we will be using 100% merino wool. Students should
bring a pair of scissors, and note-taking material if
desired.

Introduction to Scroll Design
Instructor: Hlaefdige Thora Golvik of Al in Hallingdal
Cost: $4     Length: 2

Class Description: Designed for the beginning scribe, this
hands-on class will guide students through the basics of
scroll design: border width, white space, block design, SCA
traditions and some specific Kingdom rules. Students should
bring their scribal kit (if they have one). Minors 12 and
older welcome with parent/adult attending them.

Felting
Instructor: Her Ladyship Saikhan Naranaimorin
Cost: $5     Length: 4

Class Description: We will felt a small pouch during this
class. Be prepared to get wet and soapy. Handout with
examples of Felted Saddle Pads from history, and process will
be provided. Instructor will provide all materials.

Turkish Garb
Instructor: Her Highness Safiye, Princess of Tir Righ
Cost: $4     Length: 2

Class Description: Depending on the students, will focus on
students’ needs: construction, sources, basic differences
between cultures, choosing your fabric and achieving your
look. The course includes a handout, and students should
bring note-taking materials.

Basic Calligraphy: Uncial
Instructor: Hlaefdige Thora Golvik of Al in Hallingdal
Cost: $4     Length: 2
hours     Min 1, max 4
Class Description: This class is designed to give a hands-on
approach to the Uncial hand. Uncial was primarily used from
the 4th to 6th centuries, and is the calligraphy hand used in
the Book of Kells. Students should bring calligraphy pen,
pencil, ruler, ink, note-taking materials. Some supplies will
be available from the instructor. Minors 12 and older welcome
with parent/adult attending them.

Equestrian Barding and Trapping
Instructor: Her Ladyship Saikhan Naranaimorin
Cost: $4     Length: 4
hours     Min 2, max 10
Class Description: An overview of Horse Armour, Barding,
Saddles, Saddle Pads, Bridles, Bits, Stirrups, and Trappings,
from both Europe and Asia, with discussion on medieval
tourneys and tournament rules. Patterns for horse barding
included in handout. This is a survey style class.

Introduction to Illumination: Early
Period
Instructor: Hlaefdige Thora Golvik of Al in Hallingdal
Cost: $4     Min 1, Max 4
Class Description: This hands-on class provides basic
concepts for illuminating early-period scrolls with a focus
on Celtic and Norse designs. Students will look at examples
and inspirations such as jewellery, stone carvings and how to
take these ideas and transpose it onto paper. The hands-on
portion will include laying on gouache paint. Students should
bring paints, brushes; paper will be supplied by the
instructor.    Minors 12 and older welcome
with parent/adult attending them.

Getting 5% Better
Instructor: His Highness Savaric, Prince of Tir Righ
Cost: $3     Length: 2
hours     Min 4, max 10
Class Description: This unarmoured class helps students
analyze their “game” to get 5% better. Suitable for both
rapier and heavy fighters, it’s about analyzing your game –
not about how technique. Come learn from the Prince of Tir
Righ, with a roster of 50 items that can help you gain that
5% advantage. Students must be authorized for heavy combat,
and are encouraged to bring their armour for a practice
session after class ends.

Scribal Practicum
Not a class; during this two-hour period the room is
available to students for practicing what they learned in
Introduction to Scroll Design, Introduction to Illumination
and Basic Calligraphy: Uncial. There is no charge.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26: 10 AM

Handsewing: Repairing Your Clothing
Instructor: Her Ladyship Sofia Marika Traum von Trifels
Cost: $3     Length: 2
hours     Min 3, Max 5
Class Description: It’s the middle of the tourney, and you’ve
just noticed your hem has dropped! Oh no, what will you do?
Not to worry, come learn from Mama Sofia how to make
on-the-spot repairs: quick, basic techniques for repairing
your clothing on site. Students should bring clothing that
needs repairs: dropped hems, ripped seams, small holes,
missing buttons. Minors 12 and older welcome with
parent/adult attending them. This class does not count
towards a University degree (but it’s useful
information!).

Target Archery Marshal
Instructor: Archos James Wolfden
Cost: $2     Length: 2
hours     Min 1, max 6
Class Description: This course covers the requirements of the
An Tir Book of Targets (ABT) with regards to target archery
marshalling. Students will learn how to setup a range, run a
range and inspect target archery equipment. This is a theory
class: students must also fulfill practicum requirements in
order to be authorized as TAMs. Students should bring
note-taking materials.    Sorry, no minors as
they cannot be authorized as TAMS.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26: 1 PM

History and Construction of Subtleties
Instructor: Her Ladyship Elvina Effynewoode
Cost: $3     Length: 4

Class Description: This is a slide/lecture/discussion
class.  The class takes a look at the development of the
subtlety through the medieval period, and it’s place both
social and political in the banquet.  We will also be
looking at SCA subtleties that have been presented. 
Discussion of  both period and modern techniques for
producing subtleties will be covered.  Students are
expected to bring an idea for a subtlety so possible methods
of construction may be discussed.

Inkleweaving for Beginners
Instructor: Her Ladyship Katarina von Felgenhauer
Cost: $3     Length: 4
hours     Min 1, max 6
Class Description: Learn how to warp your inkle loom, and
produce a basic pattern. This class is for beginners, and is
hands-on learning (no handout). Instructor will supply fibre
for your weaving. Students must bring a loom to work on.
Minors 14 and older welcome.
